Macy's Fraud

Some companies, such as Macy Department Store, will run your credit without your approval. Many customers are unaware that they even had a Macy's account. When you buy something at Macy's, the Macy's sales associate often ask if you want to open a Macy's account or if you have an existing Macy's account. If your answer is 'I don't know' or you are not sure then the Macy's sales associate will offer to look it up for you.

Macy's Credit Fraud

Most people are unaware that by looking up to see if they had a Macy's account, Macy's will run your credit report without your approval and if your credit report and credit score are good, then you will receive a Macy's card and a credit card account (possibly by Citibank) in the mail a week to a month later.

If you have bad credit, then Macy will send out a letter of rejection for your credit application, referencing Equifax credit report. However, if you have bad credit, then consider yourself lucky because if your credit was good, you would be issued a credit card and you will have to go through a lot of trouble to get it closed.

Many Macy's Department Store customers are unaware that by letting the Macy's sales associate look up their account on the Macy's system, their credit report will be pulled and Macy's will issue a credit card for them without them even applying. Aparently, Macy's and Citibank seem to have an agreement whereby if you have an inactive Macy's account, then Citibank will send you a letter letting you know that you will receive a new credit card. if you do not reply to refuse the card issue, you will end up with a new credit card account. The flaw in this is that, most people receive several credit card offers a week so going through them to read every fine print is often not practical.

Inactive Macy's accounts

If you think you may have a Macy's account, even if it is inactive or even transferred from another department store which Macy's has acquired, do not let any Macy's sales associate look it up. Do not let Macy's know your social security number or any sensitive information about yourself. Whether Macy's let you know or not, when they have your social security for whatever reason, there is a big chance that they will run your credit report without your knowledge. By the time you find out that Macy's fraudulently ran your credit report without your signing anything, you will either:

  • have been issued a Macy's or Macy's related credit card
  • have had your credit report pulled
  • have been rejected credit by Macy's.

Whatever the outcome, your credit is hurt and there is nothing you can do to correct it. You can try contacting Macy's to have them remove the credit inquiry or close your credit card account. However, your credit report is already pulled and your credit is already affected. So, the best thing to do is to never trust Macy's with any sensitive information. Many Macy's customers have had bad experience with their Macy's credit account and fraudulent charges. Macy's is one of the worst department stores when it comes to running customer credit without disclosure and giving false information to customers to get them to give their social security number and driving license information. If you don't want trouble later on, do not apply for Macy's credit card either.
