What to do about Identity Theft
Identity Theft is a big problem nowadays.
Below are what to do about identity theft to give you ideas of
what you can do to protect yourself against identity theft and
what to do if someone stole your identity. By taking
precautions, you can also stop identity theft and prevent
identity theft from happening to you.
Access to legal counsel
Usually when identity theft happens to you,
you need access to an attorney, lawyer or legal counsel. There
are some programs that offer affordable access to legal counsel
in case of an identity theft. There are also identity theft
protection plans that you can purchase to help protect yourself
against identity theft. However, when purchasing an identity
theft plan, beware of scam that promise you all sorts of
identity theft protection but when identity theft does happen
to you, never deliver.
Monitor credit activity
By monitoring your credit regularly, you
will see if your identity has been stolen soon after it
happens. You can sign up with services that allows you to
access your credit report (as well as credit score) whenever
you want. If you are in a risky business such as a real estate
business, you would want to check your credit report and have
credit report alerts emailed to you immediately. If you are not
in a risky business, perhaps checking your credit report once a
month or regularly would be enough to stop identity theft if it
happens to you.
If you sign up with an identity theft
protection program, the program often has feature for credit
monitoring already so you won't have to sign up with credit
report services separately. But, remember there are identity
theft program scam that will give you false assurance that your
credit report is monitored at all times but in actuality your
credit report is never monitored.
Identity restoration plan
Part of the way to stop identity theft and
prevent identity theft is to have a plan in place to restore
your credit and identity if identity theft does happen to you.
If you are a victim of identity theft, then you need to restore
your personal information and it could take a long
time. Many victims of identity thefts are so desperate to
restore their identity that they sign up with identity
restoration plans and companies that are less than ethical and
end up being victims of more scam.
